9 August is National Women's Day in South Africa!
HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY!!!
It is 53 years since the Federation of
South African Women organized a mass demonstration against the
imposition of pass laws on
women in South Africa. More than 20,000 women, led by Lilian Ngoyi (a
trade unionist and political activist), Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu,
and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, took part in the multi-racial march to the
Union Buildings in Pretoria, to deliver a petition to the prime
minister JG Strijdom.
Three years ago, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the
1956 Women's March, the South African government decided to rename
Strijdom Square, where the Union Buildings in Pretoria are, as Lillian
Ngoyi Square - to honour of all those who took part in the historic
event.
Since 9 August 1994, this day has been
commemorated annually and in support of all the strong women of South
Africa who have helped to make South Africa what it is today.
So, in support of women worldwide, our the theme of our new challenge is:
'PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN'
We're challenging you to make a papercraft creation that can be quirky, fun and frilly, elegant, sophisticated, etc etc...
BUT IT MUST SHOW HOW BEAUTIFUL AND WONDERFUL A WOMAN IS, at whatever age!!!!!!
What we don't want to see are the witches, vampires, goths, fairies, etc.
My card is merger of three images:
"Malawi Lady and Baby", "Malawi Lady with Pot", and Guinea fowls"
and I turned them into silhouettes by colouring them in solid black using my Copics.
All three the designer paper pieces come from one sheet of DP, made by Scrapsheets.co.za.
Here is a better look at the card:
The embellishments are a porcupine quill, a guinea fowl feather and some traditional Africa beads (actually they are real seeds that are used as beads) tied with a raffia bow.
